Mount Taranaki is one of the hardest day hikes in New Zealand during summer. It is very steep and long, and you need a high level of fitness and good mountain experience to reach the summit safely. Do not take this climb lightly. Always stop at the DOC Visitor Centre first to get the latest weather forecast and trail conditions. The weather changes fast here and it can become dangerous in minutes.

From Tahurangi Lodge, the route starts with a long section of steep stairs. After that, you reach the scoria slope. This part is the hardest for many people because it is very slippery. You take one step up and slide half a step down, so it requires patience and strong legs. Above that is the section called The Lizard. It is a rocky ridge where you need to use your hands to climb in some places. There is no technical climbing, but you still need to be careful and watch your footing.

This track is risky in summer and even more dangerous in winter, from April to November or December. In winter there is ice, snow, strong winds and avalanche risk. You must have the right alpine gear and experience if you even think about doing it then. Check the DOC website for full information and make sure you know what you are getting into before starting. Turning back is always an option.

If you decide to go for it, the reward is incredible. On a clear day, you get a full 360 degree view over the North Island. You can see the coastline all around and in the distance you may spot Mount Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe. If you are confident and used to night hiking, it is a great idea to leave a few hours before sunrise. Watching the sky turn orange from the summit is one of the best views you can get in New Zealand. Just be prepared and stay safe.
