Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most famous spots and it is easy to see why. The fiord is surrounded by towering cliffs, waterfalls, and lush rainforest, making it perfect for photography and wildlife spotting. You can take a boat tour directly from Milford Sound itself or join one from Te Anau if you prefer a full-day trip. On sunny days the water sparkles and the scenery is bright and beautiful, but when it rains the fiord becomes even more dramatic and moody, with waterfalls appearing everywhere along the cliffs. Boat tours give you a chance to see seals, penguins, and sometimes dolphins up close. The drive along Milford Road is scenic but winding, so plan enough time. If you step onshore be ready for sandflies and unpredictable weather, but the views are always worth it.
