The Reflective Tarn on the Pouakai Circuit is a spot you definitely want to check out. You’ll start by parking at Mangorei Road Carpark, then head up a mostly uphill track that gains about 700 meters in elevation. The path is well marked and mostly boardwalk or steps, making it a reasonably easy hike if you have an easy to intermediate level of fitness. Just make sure to wear hiking boots or running shoes because the track can get pretty muddy and messy.
It usually takes around 1 hour 45 minutes to reach the Pouakai Hut and then another 15 minutes to get to the tarn. When you arrive, the crystal-clear water reflects the surrounding mountains perfectly, if it's not too windy. It’s a picture-perfect moment you don’t want to miss. If you’re there around sunrise or sunset, the colors are especially magical.
If you want to extend your adventure, you can camp near the hut or the tarn with a tent. There’s also the option to stay in the hut, but you’ll need to buy a hut pass at one of the visitor centers and book in advance since there are only 12 beds. Alternatively, if you have a self-contained campervan, you can stay overnight right at the carpark.
