Hokitika Gorge is famous for its bright blue water that looks almost unreal. The walk starts from the car park about 30 minutes from Hokitika town and is short and easy, so anyone can enjoy it. The trail takes you through green forest to a swing bridge where you get your first clear view of the river and the steep rocky walls around it. The colour of the water comes from glacial minerals and it changes with the light, so it can look different every time you visit.

There are a few viewing platforms along the track where you can take photos and enjoy the calm atmosphere. On a sunny day the blue water looks amazing and the contrast with the white rocks is perfect for photography. Sandflies are pretty active here, especially near the river, so bring repellent if you want to stay a while.
