If you’re near New Plymouth and love a bit of adventure, Paritutu Rock is a must-visit. This volcanic rock rises about 150 meters above the surrounding landscape, giving you amazing views of the coastline, the city, and on clear days, Mount Taranaki and the Tasman Sea.
The hike to the top is short but steep, so be ready for a bit of a workout. The trail is well-marked, and reaching the summit is very rewarding with panoramic views that are perfect for photography. The surrounding parkland is also great for a picnic or a relaxing stroll before or after your hike.
Free parking is available near the trailhead, and it usually takes 30–45 minutes to reach the top, depending on your pace. The best time to visit is on a clear day for the widest views, and bring water and sturdy shoes for the climb.
Sunrise or late afternoon provides the best light for both the coastline and the rock itself. Wide-angle shots capture the full panorama, while closer angles highlight the rugged texture of the volcanic rock.
Paritutu Rock is a fantastic spot to enjoy New Plymouth’s natural beauty, get some exercise, and take memorable photos of the region.
