Yokohama (Modern Waterfront City)
Why go:
Japan’s second-largest city with a beautiful waterfront, Chinatown, and unique attractions.

JR Tokaido Line or JR Yokosuka Line direct

What makes it special:
Feels totally different from Tokyo—more open, modern, and scenic.
Kawagoe (Little Edo)
Why go:
Step back into the Edo period with preserved warehouse streets, a famous bell tower, and nostalgic candy shops.

JR Line to Ikebukuro → Transfer to Tobu Tojo Line (rapid/express)

Feels like a quieter, more compact version of Kyoto—without the crowds.
Sawara (Historic Canal Town)
Why go:
A beautifully preserved canal town where you can stroll alongside traditional merchant homes or take a small boat ride.

JR Sobu Line Rapid to Narita → JR Narita Line to Sawara

What makes it special:
Often called a “hidden Edo town” with almost no international tourists.
Nokogiriyama (Mount Nokogiri)
Why go:
Dramatic cliffs (“Hell’s Peek”), giant stone Buddha carvings, and panoramic views over Tokyo Bay.

JR Keiyo or Sobu Line to Chiba → JR Uchibo Line to Hama-Kanaya

A mix of adventure + spirituality with way fewer crowds than Hakone.
Mt. Tsukuba (Easy Nature Escape)

One of Japan’s most accessible mountains with cable cars, light hikes, and incredible views of the Kanto plain.
