The Church of Saint Francis in Porto, Portugal is an amazing piece of Gothic architecture that boasts both Baroque interior decoration and Manueline style rib vaults. Entering the church is like taking a journey through time, as elements from over eight centuries ago span across the walls, columns, ceilings and floors. The two-tier Baroque main portal stands out from the plain Gothic structure of the building. The polychromed granite statue of Saint Francis of Assisi greets visitors upon entrance into the unique space. Additionally, several chapels including the Chapel of St John the Baptist feature intricate gilt woodwork (talha dourada) and eye-catching Baroque altarpieces from the eighteenth century. Tourists can explore this site to gain insight into the history of both the Franciscan Order and architectual development of the city of Porto.
