👉🏼 This list is for the curious.
After five years of hiking, exploring, and living on Madeira, I thought I had seen it all. But some places still catch me by surprise ... either because they’re hard to find, easily overlooked, or just completely off the radar. These are ADDITIONAL BONUS and true hidden gems, the places I never saw during my first, second, or even third trip to the island.
👉🏼 This list is for the curious. If you’ve done the big hikes, famous viewpoints and want something really special, here’s your next level.
Miradouro do Chão dos Terreiros – A peaceful ridge spot with vast views and barely anyone around.
Punto Panorâmico Trompica – Maybe 2 reviews on Google, but the view? Worth every detour.
Miradouro do Pico da Cruz – Hidden among the hills of the west, a perfect golden hour escape.
Lombo do Clérigo Viewpoint – You’ve probably driven past it without realizing. Pull over next time.
Miradouro da Enseada de Baixo – Dramatic coastline below you and complete silence around.
Marco Geodésico do Pico da Boneca – A geodesic marker turned into a serene viewpoint.
Vereda da Ladeira – A micro-trail you won’t find on tourist maps.
Vereda das Voltas – Remote. Lush. Zero crowds.
Caminho de Fajã Escura a Revinha – Climb from here to Pico Grande with 1000 vertical meter
Miradouro da Penha d'Águia – One of the most striking views of Madeira’s iconic village. That one needs a 45 mins hike from Porto da Cruz though (Penha d Aguia Hike)
Rocha de Baixo – A peaceful end-of-the-world place near São Jorge.
Alice Peak – A mystical little summit with sweeping views.
Two Hidden Waterfalls (Ponta do Pargo) – Hard to find, but unforgettable once you do.
Cascata do Lombinho – Easily one of the most underrated waterfalls in Madeira.
Waterfall Antigo Traçado – An old trail reveals a secret waterfall.
Cascata da Chamusca – Remote and magical, bring good shoes.
Cascata do Córrego da Furna – Lush and wild, like Jurassic Park.
Cascata do Córrego da Pedra – Smaller but full of jungle energy.
Cascata da Ribeira da Pedra Branca – You’ll need to search for it. Totally worth it.
Teleférico das Fajãs do Cabo Girão – The cable car most people skip. Don’t be one of them.
Calhau dos Anjos – Funky, raw beach spot with hidden surfer vibes.
Capela de Nossa Senhora da Vida – Tiny chapel with a massive view.
Nossa Senhora da Pedra – A powerful, wind-whipped spiritual site by the coast.
Lagar e Poço da Laje – Old wine press hidden in the woods. Pure local culture.
Casa Caldeira – Not just a garden... more like a little fairytale.
Parque de Merendas do Chão da Ribeira – Magical picnic spot deep in the forgotten village.
Espaço Infinito – An artist's haven turned viewpoint and spiritual retreat. Leave a tip for tasting local wine...
Aussichtspunkt Caminho da Furna – Name is generic, view is anything but.
Quinta do Barbusano Winery (São Vicente) – Skip the tourist wine places and come here. (gets more and more famous though)
Restaurante Calhau de São Jorge – Unreal setting, great food, off the map.
Tio Patuscas – The kind of "bar" only locals know
Las Caraibas – Hidden lunch near Seixal. Just go.
You don’t just want more things to see — you want what others don’t find. This list is for those who’ve already done the PR1, Cabo Girão, and Pico do Arieiro. It’s for those looking to fall in love with Madeira again, one secret at a time.
I put together this custom Google Map for exactly that reason:
