There’s no better way to feel the freedom of Madeira than on two wheels. From cliff roads to secret villages, this itinerary gives you the most scenic, winding, thrilling scooter routes ... carefully selected for views, stops and safety. Did them by myself.
🏝️ 1. Ponta do Sol → Madalena do Mar → Jardim do Mar
📍Start: Ponta do Sol (early morning)
📍End: Jardim do Mar (for lunch or a coffee)
➡️ Drive through the famous Cascata dos Anjos (a waterfall over the road), stop at the banana plantations in Madalena do Mar, and relax at the seaside promenade of Jardim do Mar.
⛪ 2. Funchal → Garajau → Cristo Rei → Praia da Garajau
📍Start: Funchal city center
📍End: Down at the Garajau Beach (cable car or road)
➡️ Take a coastal ride east to the massive Cristo Rei statue, then head down the road or cable car to the rocky beach below. Amazing snorkel spot.
🐋 3. Santa Cruz → Machico → Caniçal → Whale Museum
📍Start: Santa Cruz
📍End: Caniçal (Whale Museum + lunch)
➡️ Great morning ride through scenic coastline. Stop in Machico for a beach break or coffee, then continue to Caniçal — visit the Whale Museum and grab lunch at A Pipa or Tasquinha do Pescador.
🌿 4. Ribeiro Frio → Faial → Santana
📍Start: Ribeiro Frio
📍End: Santana (with stop in Faial)
➡️ Cruise through laurel forests and mountainside curves. Have a trout lunch at Ribeiro Frio or Faial and finish with views in Santana (you can even visit the traditional houses).
🏞️ 5. São Vicente → Seixal → Porto Moniz → Paul da Serra (Advanced!)
📍Start: São Vicente
📍End: Paul da Serra plateau
➡️ This loop is long and winding — only for skilled riders. Stop at the black-sand beach in Seixal, check the natural pools of Porto Moniz, and ride back up the wild road through Paul da Serra. Epic day.
