Tried, tested, and recommended by someone who really cares.
Let’s keep it real: Madeira isn’t the easiest place in the world for vegans or vegetarians.
This is an island rooted in fishing villages, meat-heavy espetadas, and Sunday feasts with family ... so don’t expect every tasca to know what “plant-based” even means. Especially along the North Coast, where things are still wonderfully traditional (but not exactly tofu-forward).
But I knew this would be a challenge — and because so many people asked me, I made it a mission.
I spent days and nights researching, testing, trying dishes, talking to staff, finding hidden gems. I didn’t want to just copy a few blog lists or send you to places with "one vegan salad."
This list is personal. It’s real. It’s made with love. And yes – the food actually tastes great.
Brunch cafés that use almond milk, tofu, fresh veg, and grains
Hidden restaurants with daily vegetarian or vegan dishes that locals love
Health-focused eateries with international twists
Shops and markets where you can find plant-based essentials
Takeaway options for hiking days or picnics in nature
And yes – a few real-deal vegan places in Funchal (finally!)
If you're serious about having easy access to vegan/vegetarian food, Funchal is your friend. Most of the plant-based options I found are based in or around the capital — especially the brunch cafés and health-conscious kitchens.
You’ll still find a few surprising vegetarian-friendly places across the island — but don’t expect to rock up to a beach bar in Seixal and order oat milk cappuccino. (Believe me, I tried.)
This isn’t just a bunch of pins. These are places I’ve personally tested, or that came highly recommended by people I trust. Some are full-on vegan. Some are super adaptable and welcoming.
And most importantly: they taste good.
💬 Why I Made This
Because I know how frustrating it is to travel as a vegetarian or vegan - many of our Homeoffice guests told me that - especially when every menu starts with meat and ends with fish.
So I made this list for you. If you’ve ever felt like an afterthought at dinner, this is your cheat code to eat well on Madeira.
I hope it saves you hours of searching, and makes your trip just that little bit easier (and tastier).
And if you need more help, message me anytime. I’ll tell you what’s new, where to go, or even help you find something near your hotel.
