Capture the best dusk light in Madeira with my curated guide including secret spots you won’t find on every tourist map.
★ Highest Sunset Spot on the Island ★
The easiest summit route: a 6 km round‑trip with ~260 m climb. Hike about 1.5 hours before sunset to reach the summit in golden light. Only few make it up there, so you’ll often have the sky to yourself. Bring a headlamp for the walk back.
★ Convenient and Dramatic ★
Less crowded in the evening than at sunrise, and arguably more spectacular. For best views, walk 1 km out toward the “Stairway to Heaven” path just before it gets dark — it frames the ridge perfectly.
★ Views Over Both Coasts ★
Perched at ~1,000 m, Encumeada offers panoramic sunsets over the North and South ocean horizons. A little-known alternative is Pico Alto Encumeada, ~1,750 m elevation — 20 min off-route from Achada do Teixeira. Raw and rarely visited.
★ Serene Western Coast Gem ★
A small platform with wide ocean and cliff views—perfect for sunset solitude. Space for just a handful of cars, so come early and enjoy the peacefulness.
★ Madeira’s Raw Cliffside Beauty ★
A short walk leads to a coastal plateau ideal for sunset photographs. Rugged, dramatic, and almost always empty. Magical light reflects off ocean and rock at the golden hour.
★ Sunset at Westernmost Edge ★
Park right next to the lighthouse at ~312 m on dramatic cliffs. The sun sets into the ocean from here—it’s a cinematic coastal finale.
★ Laid-Back Sunset by the Sand ★
One of the few sandy shores on Madeira. Easy parking and a relaxing vibe make this ideal for families or anyone craving a gentle evening by the sea.
★ Dining & Sunset in One ★
Watch the evening glow over the Atlantic while dining on ultra-fresh fish from the terrace. A calm seaside charm few find by accident.
★ Sunset Under a Waterfall ★
This quirky spot features a waterfall flowing onto the coastal road. At sunset, the sky reflects off the cascade creating glowing gold-red hues—plus, you can drive through the waterfall for free.
★ Sunset in Style ★
At this stylish rooftop bar with an infinity pool, cocktails and ocean views match the golden horizon. Upscale and scenically ideal for a relaxed evening.
Hidden from most maps, this high-altitude ridge—reached via Boca da Corrida or Nuns Valley or side hike—is pristine and rarely crowded. Dramatic ridgeline views across Madeira’s central peaks offer cinematic sunset drama.
★ Cityscape in the Glow ★
Overlook the harbor and city lights as dusk falls. Less known, makes for a perfect evening wind-down spot when you don’t feel like hiking higher.
★ Above the Clouds Magic ★
A short walk from the car park, this viewpoint often sits above cloud layers at sunset—ideal for epic skies and ridge silhouettes.
14. Cabo Girão Skywalk
★ Dramatic Cliffs & Ocean Glow ★
Europe’s highest sea cliff delivers a sunset framed by staggering height and vast Atlantic. Arrive 30–45 mins early for light play across the terraced hillsides.
15. Porto Moniz Natural Pools
★ Sunsets by the Lava Pools ★
Best visited after the crowds leave. At golden hour, the pools mirror fiery skies and the crashing waves add drama. Quiet, surreal, and 100% worth the drive.
16. Praia Formosa (Funchal)
★ Beach Sunset with City Backdrop ★
Madeira’s longest public beach is a golden hour favorite. Relaxed promenade, dark pebbles glowing in the sun, and an easy walk from the city’s west side.
Arrive 30–45 min before sunset – ideal light and a good vantage spot.
Watch webcams the evening before—if mid-level cloud sits above 1600 m, go coastal instead.
Dress in layers, especially at altitude – wind can chill fast.
Take a headlamp if you're hiking back at dusk.
Bonus idea: Bring snacks or a poncha to enjoy after the sun disappears.
