Hike timing in Madeira is an art
Forget what you read on TripAdvisor.
Hike timing in Madeira is an art — and it can make or break your experience. I'm talking crowds, clouds, and car chaos. After 5+ years of hiking every trail, here’s the truth no one tells you.
If the hike is popular → you start before the sun. Period.
🥇 Top Trails Where You Must Start Early (before 07:30):
PR1 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo:
→ Start at 06:00–06:30 (with headlamp), watch sunrise from the trail.
→ You’ll avoid tour groups and traffic AND catch the magic cloud inversion.
PR6 25 Fontes:
→ If you’re not hiking by 08:00, you’ll feel like you're in a Disneyland queue.
→ After 10:00? Forget it.
Vereda do Larano / Boca do Risco:
→ Early start = ocean cliffs in golden light + shade the whole way.
→ Later? Harsh sun + crowded Porto da Cruz cafes at the finish.
PR9 Caldeirão Verde:
→ Starts shady and mystical before 09:00.
→ After 10:00? Muddy, packed, and selfie sticks at every waterfall.
These are OK to start late — or even after lunch:
Levada do Alecrim: never super crowded
Levada dos Tornos (Funchal start): long, peaceful, mostly flat
Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço: late start works for sunset return, but bring headlamps!
Short viewpoint trails like:
Bica da Cana
Ponta da Ladeira
Miradouro do Curtado
→ All amazing for late afternoon + picnic.
Weekends & holidays = chaos on popular trails.
Parking at Arieiro, Rabaçal, Queimadas is often full by 09:00.
→ Start early, or go late afternoon.
Tip: For PR6, start at 16:00. 25 Fontes clears out, and the light is gorgeous. Just be back before sunset.
Use NetMadeira.com webcams before every hike.
If the Pico do Arieiro cam shows clouds above 1600m → wait it out or switch hikes.
Example A:
You want to hike PR1 and also get drone shots at sunrise?
→ Arrive at 05:45. Yes, seriously. Best light, no buses, no sound.
Example B:
You only want a chill levada and slept in.
→ Do Alecrim or Levada dos Tornos or many other trails from my guide. They’re always peaceful.
Example C:
You just landed and want a short hike with good views.
→ Go for Vereda dos Balcões (PR11) or Ponta de Sao Lourenco (PR8) around 16:00.
It’s usually calm(er).
