🚗 Renting a Car on Madeira – What You Really Need to Know
If you're planning to explore beyond Funchal, renting a car is one of the best decisions you'll make – but here are the real insider tips nobody tells you:
🔑 Manual vs Automatic
Manual cars are cheaper and more common, but Madeira’s mountain roads are no joke – steep inclines, hairpin turns, and narrow lanes.
If you're not fully confident driving a stick, pay the extra for automatic. It’s worth every cent on this island.
🚙 Car Size Matters
Compact cars are easier to park and navigate in small villages, but:
If you're traveling in a group or with luggage, go one size up – but avoid huge SUVs, which are a nightmare in some narrow towns.
🅿️ Parking Warnings
Parking in Funchal can be tricky. Use underground parking lots or stay just outside the center.
In rural areas, always park off-road or well-marked spaces, especially on levada hikes. Parking illegally can lead to fines or blocked roads.
🧭 Download Offline Maps
Google Maps works well but Maps.me or organic Maps is even better for off-road hikes and small levada paths.
Many viewpoints or hikes don’t have proper signage – you'll need offline guidance.
⛽ Fuel Tips
Gas stations aren’t open 24/7 outside of Funchal. Always top up before heading out to remote areas.
Keep an eye on the Calheta → Paul do Mar / Ponta do Pargo stretch – no stations for over 40 km!
🛞 Local Rentals vs Big Brands
Big names like Avis or Europcar are available, but local companies often offer better service and no hidden fees.

💥 Bonus: Don’t forget insurance!
Full insurance is highly recommended, especially for rural roads, off-the-beaten-path hikes, and stone walls that "come out of nowhere" 😄
