The PR1 Vereda do Arieiro is the most famous hike in Madeira and one of the most beautiful day hikes. If you are a little lucky with the weather, this hike will be not only the literal but also the figurative highlight of your trip. The views of the island's highest peaks are phenomenal and the hike itself is a cool challenging hike full of variety and natural beauty. You start at 1818 meters altitude at Pico do Arieiro where you can first enjoy a sunrise high above the clouds. After this the hike starts to Pico Ruivo, the highest mountain of Madeira!

The trail measures approx. 7 kilometers one way, taking approximately 6 to 7 hours or 3.5 to 4 hours one way to complete. With a difference in altitude of 1650 meters or 900 meters one way, the hike is undoubtedly challenging due to the significant height difference and duration. However, completing the hike as a one way route makes it much more manageable, with a relatively easier level of difficulty.
