Orkney Islands, United Kingdom

Orkney can be visited year-round, but choose the time of year to suit your interests. This seasonal guide will help with your planning.

🌸 Spring (April–May)

  • Long daylight returns; puffins, seals, and white-tailed eagles become visible.

  • Folk festivals revive island energy, and ferry timings are extended.

  • Milder weather, though still pack layers and waterproofs.

ā˜€ļø Summer (June–August) – Peak Time

  • Milder weather, midnight sun (04:00–22:30), quiet roads, abundant festivals, nature and ferry frequency.

  • Puffins and seabirds are at their best.

  • Cruise ship arrivals may cause midday congestion, so avoid hotspots on cruise ship days or go early/late.

šŸ‚ Autumn (September–October)

  • Fewer tourists and cruise ships; perfect for calm, reflective island travel.

  • Migration season for geese, owls and other raptors provides dramatic birdwatching opportunities.

  • Cooler, moody weather is ideal for atmospheric photography.

ā„ļø Winter (November–March)

  • Deep winter solitude; wind, waves, and near-empty roads—pure wilderness.

  • Historic sites are quiet and introspective. Midge-free, but daylight is short (~09:05–15:16).

  • Roads and ferries may be delayed in bad weather, so allow schedule flexibility.
