Rathlin Island is one of the best places to see puffins in Northern Ireland.  Reached by boat from Ballycastle

Rathlin Island, just six miles off the coast of County Antrim, is Northern Ireland’s only inhabited offshore island and a stronghold for seabirds, especially puffins. From late spring to mid-summer, the cliffs at the island’s west end become alive with puffins, razorbills, guillemots, and kittiwakes, all nesting in the vertical basalt ledges that rise above the sea.

Reaching Rathlin is easy via a regular ferry from Ballycastle, with options for both passenger and vehicle crossings. Once on the island, a seasonal bus or bike hire can take you to the RSPB Seabird Centre at the West Light, where a series of viewing platforms offer close-up views of the bustling bird colonies. The upside-down lighthouse built into the cliff face is a highlight in itself and makes this spot particularly memorable.

The island also has walking trails, quiet beaches, and a small café and visitor centre in Church Bay, near the ferry terminal. With a slower pace and rich wildlife, Rathlin feels like a peaceful step back in time and one of the best places in Northern Ireland to see puffins in their natural habitat.
