Puffin Island, known in Welsh as Ynys Seiriol, sits just off the eastern tip of Anglesey near Penmon Point. Steeped in both natural beauty and history, the island is a protected sanctuary for seabirds and marine life. While landing is not permitted, regular boat trips from Beaumaris or Penmon offer the chance to circle the island and see puffins, cormorants, guillemots, razorbills, and the occasional grey seal basking on the rocks.
Puffin numbers have slowly recovered in recent years following successful conservation work, and from April to July, small groups can be seen among the grassy ledges and cliff edges. The boat tours often include commentary on the island’s wildlife and history, including the ruins of a 12th-century monastery and a former Victorian semaphore station.
Cruises typically last around 1 to 1.5 hours, and most operate in calm weather conditions, so it's worth checking forecasts before booking. With its mix of seabird life, marine sightings, and striking coastal scenery, Puffin Island is a highlight of any Anglesey wildlife adventure, especially for those looking for a gentle introduction to puffin watching from the sea.
