Located in St. George, Utah, offers stunning views of the surrounding desert landscape and the nearby Snow Canyon State Park. Here's an in-depth guide to help you plan your trip and capture breathtaking photographs along the Cinder Cone Trail:

  • Location and Accessibility:

    • Cinder Cone Trail is located in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, just north of St. George, Utah.

    • To reach the trailhead, take Interstate 15 to Exit 10 (Washington Parkway). From there, head north on Washington Parkway, then turn right onto Red Hills Parkway. Follow Red Hills Parkway until you reach the signed entrance for the trailhead parking lot.

    • The trailhead is easily accessible by car, and parking is available at the trailhead parking lot.

  • Trail Overview:

    • Cinder Cone Trail is a moderate to strenuous hike that ascends a volcanic cinder cone, offering panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape.

    • The trail is approximately 3 miles round trip and gains about 700 feet in elevation. It features rocky terrain, switchbacks, and some steep sections, so sturdy hiking shoes and plenty of water are essential.

  • Planning Your Visit:

    • Check the weather forecast before heading out, as temperatures can be extreme in the desert, especially during the summer months.

    • Start your hike early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds, and to capture the best lighting conditions for photography.

  • Photography Tips:

    • The views from the top of Cinder Cone offer incredible opportunities for landscape photography. Be sure to bring your camera and capture the unique desert scenery, including the red rock formations, expansive vistas, and distant mountain ranges.

    • Experiment with different compositions and perspectives as you ascend the trail, taking advantage of the changing scenery and lighting conditions.

    • Consider bringing a wide-angle lens to capture the vastness of the landscape, as well as a telephoto lens to zoom in on distant features and details.

    • Don't forget to photograph the unique geological features of the cinder cone itself, including the volcanic rocks and rugged terrain.

  • Safety Considerations:

    • Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks, especially during hot weather conditions. Bring plenty of water and snacks to fuel your hike.

    • Watch out for loose rocks and uneven terrain, especially on the steep sections of the trail. Take your time and use caution when ascending and descending the cinder cone.

    • Be mindful of wildlife and desert plants along the trail, and avoid disturbing or approaching them.

  • Leave No Trace:

    • Practice Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash, staying on designated trails, and respecting the natural environment. Help preserve the beauty of Cinder Cone Trail for future visitors to enjoy.

Please stay on the marked trail for this hike. There seems to be steep trails that go up the cinder cone, but they are very difficult with Porous volcanic rock and are to be preserved. Please stay on the designated route! This hike is best enjoyed just before sunrise, and photographing nearby Snow Canyon State park with 360 views at sunrise is absolutely breathtaking!
