Set against miles of open desert, the area feels both vast and intimate. The combination of colorful outcrops, dramatic erosion patterns, and the solitude of the Nevada backcountry make it a must-see for photographers, hikers, and geology enthusiasts.
Little Finland is one of the Mojave Desert’s hidden gems—a surreal landscape of sculpted red Aztec sandstone formations that seem almost otherworldly. Tucked away near the north end of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, this remote plateau offers jaw-dropping views of intricate rock fins, arches, and wind-carved shapes that glow in rich shades of orange and red, especially during golden hour.
Access
Reaching Little Finland requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle, especially for the last few miles along Gold Butte Road and Mud Wash Road, which can be rough, sandy, and rocky. Those without an appropriate vehicle can still access the area by hiking in from a distance, though the trek is strenuous and best for experienced backcountry hikers.
Camping
There are no developed campgrounds at Little Finland, but dispersed camping is allowed on surrounding BLM land. There are several flat, scenic spots nearby where you can camp under the stars. As always, follow Leave No Trace principles and pack out all trash and waste. There are no facilities, so plan accordingly.
Pet Friendly
Little Finland is pet-friendly. Dogs are allowed but must be under control at all times. The terrain is rugged and can get extremely hot, so bring plenty of water and watch your dog’s paws on the sun-heated sandstone.
Tips for Visiting
Best visited in fall, winter, or early spring to avoid extreme heat.
Bring extra water, a full tank of gas, and navigation tools (no cell service).
Popular nearby sites include Whitney Pockets, Devils Throat, and ancient petroglyph panels along the way.
Whether you're there for sunrise photography or to spend a quiet night beneath a blanket of stars, Little Finland offers a rare and captivating look at the raw beauty of Nevada’s desert wilderness.
