Visiting these badlands is a great way to experience natural wonders, magnificent views and breathtaking photographs. This vast wilderness area is made up of 45,000 acres of sandstone formations, multicolored rock layers and fascinating geology. It offers plenty of opportunity for exploration, from easy hikes to challenging terrain. Not only does Bisti offer a memorable experience, but it's also incredibly photogenic. Photographers will love the ethereal Alien Egg Nursery, Stone Wings and Conversing Hoodoos, amongst others. For safety, it’s best to have a GPS app installed on your smartphone and to consider a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) if you are worried about losing your way or having a medical emergency. The best months to visit are usually September/October and April/May but any time of year can provide beautiful shots.

  • Though these trailheads are off regularly maintained roads, they are not paved. County Road 7500 can become extremely slick and impassible when wet and is sandy in places when dry. Conditions of roads can change at any time due to weather. Drivers should avoid dirt roads during rain or snow. Drivers should be cautious of wash-out following rain or snowmelt.

  • Planning Your Route:

  • There are no trails in Bisti, no boardwalks, no rangers, no consistent cell service.  Lots of folks don’t plan ahead and end up walking around for hours, getting lost and not seeing much.

    • Bisti Badlands is situated near the town of Farmington, New Mexico, approximately 37 miles south. It's recommended to use a GPS or navigation app to guide you.

    • The primary access point to Bisti Badlands is the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Trailhead, located off County Road 7297 (also known as the Bisti Highway). From Farmington, take Highway 371 south for about 30 miles, then turn right onto County Road 7297. Follow this road for approximately 12 miles until you reach the trailhead parking area.

  • Preparing for the Journey:

    • Before heading out, ensure your vehicle is in good condition, and you have a full tank of gas, as there are no services or facilities near Bisti Badlands.

    • Bring plenty of water, food, and supplies, as well as any photography equipment you'll need. The terrain can be rugged, so sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.

  • Navigating the Trails:

    • Once you arrive at the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Trailhead, you'll find a small parking area and an informational kiosk with trail maps. Sign in at the trail register before starting your hike.

    • There are several trails and routes to explore within Bisti Badlands, but navigation can be challenging due to the lack of marked trails. It's advisable to use a GPS or map to help guide your journey.

    • Keep track of landmarks and your surroundings to avoid getting lost, especially if you plan to venture off-trail to find specific photo locations.

    • Nearly every photographer going to Bisti wants to go to the Eggs’Whether you call them ‘Cracked Eggs,’ Alien Eggs,’ ”the Alien Egg Nursery’  or ‘the Egg Hatchery’ it is the certainly the most famous and desirable photo location in Bisti. From the parking lot, it should take you about 35-45 minutes to reach the eggs (assuming you don’t stop or take any detours on the way). GPS: 36.2674, -108.22374

    • Other than the Eggs, the Stone Wings are probably Bisti’s most famous photo op.   These large wings are perched on an easily accessible bluff and are truly magnificent…certainly among the most photogenic I’ve seen anywhere.  Wonderful at sunrise and sunset and easy to photograph from multiple angles and perspectives.  It is also an absolutely incredible location for night photography. GPS: 36.279285, -108.237340

  • Taking Photos:

    • Bisti Badlands is renowned for its surreal and otherworldly landscapes, featuring colorful hoodoos, petrified wood, and eroded rock formations. Take your time to explore and discover unique compositions for your photos.

    • The best times for photography are during the early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and more flattering. Be prepared to experiment with different angles and perspectives to capture the essence of this remarkable landscape.

    • Practice Leave No Trace principles by staying on designated trails and avoiding damage to fragile formations. Take only photos and leave nothing behind except footprints.

    • Overnight Camping

While camping in the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area is a rewarding and unique experience, visitors should take special note to ensure their trip is safe and does no harm to the environment. There are no developed campsites or facilities. Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM managed land for 14 days. After this time period, campers should relocate to another site to prevent damage caused by the continual use of any particular areas. Another primitive camping site nearby is Badlands overlook
