Tucked away at the end of a rugged gravel road in the Highlights, Þakgil is a breathtaking hidden gem that feels like stepping onto another planet. There are a lot of different trails that have epic panoramic views of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and that take you through moss covered canyons The main hiking loops, like the ellow Trail, start right from the campsite and can take a full day. We just came here for the day and found random hiking spots, and it was so fun to hike around as we barely saw anyone else. There is a campsite here if you want to stay the night! You have to take F roads to reach this area, so check the roads prior.
