Get ready for one of the most rewarding hikes in the Highlands. From the Landmannalaugar campsite, a trail leads you up the steep sides of this ancient volcano, whose name translates to 'Blue Peak' for its unique blue-black slopes. The climb is a challenging one, with loose gravel underfoot, but the 360-degree views from the summit are absolutely breathtaking, stretching over a rainbow of rhyolite mountains, black lava fields, and even distant glaciers on a clear day. The full loop hike is about 6 km and takes most people 3 to 4 hours, a truly unforgettable Icelandic adventure.
To get to the summit you want to follow Path C. After the summit if you continue on C and turn left and continue up B you can also see the sulphur wave viewpoint in one hike. If you combine this by finishing B and following ADGH back to camp the loop is about 10km but really shows you the best of the whole are in one. hike.
We unfortunately could not make it all the way up due to verrry strong winds. Our picture here is about 40% of the way up so you can imagine how impressive the views could be.
