Múlagljúfur Canyon is a dramatic, narrow gorge with a waterfall. This was one of our favourite hikes and view in Iceland so we highly recommend coming on a clear day. The trail is steep, often muddy and slippery, and includes loose rock and a few short scrambles, so wear hiking boots. There are a couple of great viewpoints but minimal safety barriers or facilities, so stay back from edges, skip the descent in high wind or heavy rain.
You have two hiking options. You can hike to the main Múlagljúfur viewpoint, which is about 3.86km (or 2.4 miles) out-and-back, but you can also hike to the top of the Múlagljúfur Canyon, and in this case, the hike is about 5.77km (or 3.6 miles). If you have the time, I’d recommend the longer hike. While the main viewpoint offers the best views, the additional views of the Canyon and the waterfalls are worth the time.
Múlagljúfur Canyon has enjoyed growing popularity in recent years, and it can now get crowded up there in the middle of the day. A parking area was recently built near the trailhead. The access road was improved too, and it is not easy to see from the road.
