Mt Fuji is such an iconic symbol to Japan that you must come visit at least once in your Japan trip. Most take a day trip from Tokyo, and although it is doable, I like to spend at least two days in the area. There's five lakes surrounding Mt. Fuji and so many gems to look forward to visiting that just one day trip is not enough!
If you're planning to take a day trip to Mt Fuji, you can take various of trains to get there or just take a shuttle bus to Kawaguchiko from either Shinjuku station (Busta Shinjuku 4F) or Tokyo station (JR EXPRESS BUS office). The shuttle bus only has a couple of stops including Fuji-Q (amusement park) I do prefer taking the bus simply because I dot want to get lost during transfers of trains while trying to get to Kawaguchiko. Bus usually cost around $20-25 USD and take around 2 hours to get there.
Another great way to get to Kawaguchico is by renting a car and using it to explore Mt Fuji. There's plenty of places to check out and once in the Mt Fuji areas, public transportation is limited here. We learned that renting a car makes the most out of your Mt Fuji trip!. you can rent a car from Tokyo or once you get to Kawaguchiko, but till be better to just rent it out from Tokyo. you can book one via Klook! Don't forget your international license!
