For the most part, YES! The NC500 is dog friendly!

There are so many places to explore with your four legged friend from woodlands to beautiful beaches, the options are endless.

However here are a few things to keep in mind if travelling with your furry friend!

Top tips

  • Your dog will likely need to be kept on a lead most of the time! There is A LOT of livestock roaming around in the highlands and therefore dogs would not be allowed off lead.

  • In the UK it is a legal requirement to have your dog 'secured' when travelling in a car. You can find more information from the RAC here.

  • A lot of the beaches do allow dogs, but make sure to do your research before you head on your road trip! Some beaches do not allow dogs during the summer season.

  • Check out the Scottish Outdoor Access code here for more information about walking your dog in Scotland!

  • Be aware that some areas in Scotland can be prone to ticks. Make sure you check your dogs coat after any walks and remove them! They are most active between May - October. You may want to bring a tick removal tool and basic first-aid kit for your pup.

  • Pack enough food and fresh water for your dog. Pet shops are not always found in remote areas.

  • Bring biodegradable poo bags and dispose of them properly. Bins are limited, so carry a sealed waste pouch or plan to pack it out if needed.

  • If you're planning hikes, make sure they're dog-appropriate. Some longer or steeper trails (like Stac Pollaidh or Suilven) may not be suitable for all breeds or older dogs.

  • If your dog tends to get carsick, bear in mind the NC500 has a lot of winding, single-track roads - plan extra breaks and keep water handy.

Dog- friendly Accommodation & Food Stops

  • You will have to check if your accommodation or campsite is dog friendly and they may require an additional fee. Some accommodations do not allow dogs during the summer season! Check out our travel tip for sugesstions on dog-friendly accommodation options!

  • Most cafés and pubs in rural Scotland are dog friendly, but always check in advance, especially in high season or if they serve food indoors only. Check out our travel tip for suggestions of dog-friendly cafes and restaurants!
