Scotland is a stunning country, but the one thing that lets it down...the midges!!!

The Highland midge can be found in parts of Scotland and is a little fly, often found in swarms! Midge bites are harmless, just very itchy!

When is the midge season?

Midge season is usually between late April - October.

When are they most active?
Midges are most active at dawn and dusk, especially when the air is still. Windy days are your best friend, they hate the breeze!

Where are there midges?

Midges love the humidity and damp conditions, so will be worse near rivers, woodlands and lochs!

The west of the Highlands, islands and parts of the Cairngorms are the worst spots for midges.

Top tips to deal with midges:

  • Use insect repellent, preferably DEET-free! Check out brands like Smidge or Incognito.

  • Wear a hat with a net that covers the face and neck

  • Cover up! Wear long sleeves and long trousers!

  • Wear light clothing. Midges are drawn to dark colours.

  • You can check out a live midge forecast! Scottish Midge Forecast or the Smidge app lets you check specific locations in real time.

  • If hiring a campervan or motorhome, consider checking if the rental vehicle has midge mesh screens.

HEADS UP:

It's also worth being cautious about tick bites as well, especially if walking or camping!
