The NC500 is one of the most iconic road trips in the world and most famous within the UK and Scotland.

Here's the lowdown on the NC500:

  • The North Coast 500 (NC500) is a road trip located in the Scottish Highlands of Scotland.

  • The road is 516 miles (830km) long!

  • The route was announced under the name 'NC500' by the Visit Scotland Tourism Board to help boost visitor numbers!

  • It has been named fifth in the “Top 5 Coastal Routes in the World” by Now Travel Magazine!

  • The start and end point of the NC500 road trip is traditionally Inverness.

  • The NC500 is known for rugged coastlines, pristine beaches, beautiful wildlife, gorgeous landscapes, stunning mountains and is steeped in history.

  • We would suggest you drive the route anti-clockwise! The most spectacular part of the NC500 is the west coast.

  • It's important to know that there are many single track roads on the NC500, some of which are not suitable for caravans or motorhomes. You must be comfortable reversing a vehicle.

  • Accommodation along the route includes campsites, caravan parks, hostels, hotels and B&Bs, but does book up very quickly in advance, especially over the summer months.

  • Mobile phone signal can be really patchy along the NC500 so make sure you have downloaded maps on your phone, although the route is very well signposted.

  • If you're planning on wild camping along the NC500, please make sure you check out the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

  • If you have extra time, we would recommend exploring the areas Glencoe, Fort William and Loch Lomond as an add-on to your NC500 trip! They are all gorgeous areas.

  • Respect the Environment. The Highlands are a delicate ecosystem. Always follow Leave No Trace principles, dispose of waste properly, stick to paths and respect wildlife.

  • The NC500 passes through many small villages and towns. Supporting local businesses like cafes, pubs and artisan shops is a great way to make the most of you trip!
