The low down on whisky distilleries on the NC500!
The Highlands is a huge whisky region in Scotland and is known for its diversity of whiskies. It's also home to some of the oldest distilleries in Scotland.
The NC500 is home to a brilliant mix of Highland distilleries, many of which offer tours, whisky tastings, and have their own shops on site!
It's perfect for picking up a bottle to take home. Along the route, you’ll find both single malts and blended whiskies being produced in the region.
Random fun fact - 'Scotch whisky' has to be made in Scotland using just water and malted barley, distilled in a pot and matured in oak casks for a minimum of three years! It also needs to have an alcohol content of at least 40% to earn the name “Scotch.”
Some important info to know:
Some distilleries close at certain times of year due to cleaning schedules or seasonal hours and many ask you to book your tour in advance. It’s always worth checking their websites before you plan your visit.
Most distilleries offer guided tours, which usually include a walk-through of the production process followed by a tasting session.
Some also offer “tasting-only” experiences, ideal if you’re short on time.
Tours usually last around 45–90 minutes depending on the type you choose.
Pre-booking is highly recommended, especially during peak summer months (May–September). Some smaller distilleries have limited group sizes or only run a few tours per day.
If you’re keen to sample a variety of whiskies without going on a full distillery tour, then we highly recommend stopping by the whisky bars at Dornoch Castle Hotel or The Torridon Hotel! Both spots have an impressive selection from all over Scotland and their staff are brilliant at helping you find you a whisky you will love!
Some of the most popular NC500 Distilleries to visit include:
Glenmorangie (Located in Tain) – One of the most famous Highland distilleries, known for smooth single malts and a beautiful visitor centre.
Balblair (Located near Dornoch) – Historic and scenic, often praised for its storytelling-style tours.
Wolfburn (Located in Thurso) – A newer craft distillery with small-batch whiskies and a more personal experience.
Scotland has very strict drink-driving laws. The legal alcohol limit is extremely low in Scotland (lower than England and Wales). Even one whisky could put you over the limit. Always plan to have a designated driver or book a taxi!
You can often buy exclusive bottlings only available at the distillery.
If you're travelling internationally afterward, check duty-free allowances for bringing whisky home.
