👣 Our fav hikes in Rarotonga 🥾
Hiking Rarotonga is an unforgettable adventure... but a little preparation goes a long way! 🌴🏔️✨
New Zealand Adventures
Rarotonga, Cook Islands
🌴 Ikurangi Ascent (our fav!)
📍 Location: Avatiu Valley.
⛰️ Why Hike: A relatively short but steep climb leading to sweeping views over the north side of the island. You most likely won't see another person on this hike. The terrain is varied and beautiful. The 360' views are Epic!
🕓 Time: About 2–3 hours return.
🌿 Hospital Hill (our go-to regular walk)
📍 Location: Nikao, near the hospital.
⛰️ Why Hike: A gentler uphill walk, perfect for a quick escape into nature without needing a full day. Lovely ocean views once you reach the top. (there's is an absolute amazing loop track tagged on if you know where to go, further details in our guide).
🕓 Time: About 30-45 minutes return.
🌳 Tereora Hill
📍 Location: Near Tereora College and the golf course.
⛰️ Why Hike: A quiet local favourite hike which isn't too challenging compared to others and offers amazing viewpoints, nice terrain and fantastic views. And our fav little vertical 'cave' to squeeze through. It's a beautiful spot to catch the sunrise and get epic views of the planes landing/taking off and over epic views of Avarua. This hike isn't on any map. Further directions are in our guide.
🕓 Time: Around 1–1.5 hours return
🛤️ Cross Island Walk (Te Rua Manga – "The Needle")
📍 Locations: Avatiu Valley & Papua Valley.
⛰️ Why Hike: The most famous hike on the island. Challenging in parts, especially around "The Needle," but you’ll experience lush jungle trails, epic viewpoints, and waterfalls/waterholes along the way. We love doing the loop track from Wigmores Waterfall end, or simply going up & back down from the town side - the quickest way up.
🕓 Time: 3–4 hours one way
🌳 Maungatea Bludf
📍 Location: in behind Avarua town
⛰️ Why Hike: This hike has been basically inaccessible for years due to being so overgrown and having to crawl on your hands and knees for the first hour. It's recently been cleared with chainsaws etc (in 2025) for access for bird monitoring. We finally got to conquer this hike and it didn't disappoint! Amazing varied terrain, unreal views! There's even wild pineapples grown up top! The hike is poorly marked currently and starts on private property which you are allowed to access via. It is on the Alltrails app. We suggest to go with a local who knows the way, Bruce from Maunga Tours or if you're brave, follow the Alltrails map (we can't guarantee their trail is correct as we went with a local who knew the way).
🕓 Time: 3.5-4.5 hours return.
🌄 Te Kou
📍 Location: Southern Rarotonga.
⛰️ Why Hike: One of the highest accessible peaks on the island. Te Kou offers rugged, adventurous terrain and dramatic panoramic views for those up for a steeper challenge. The start of the walk is through the most (private) beautiful gardens.
🕓 Time: 3–4 hours return.
⚡ Hiking Tips for Rarotonga
🥾 Wear Proper Footwear: Trails can be muddy and slippery—good shoes are a must.
🥤 Bring Water and Snacks: The humidity hits hard—stay hydrated.
🧢 Start Early: Cooler temps and better light for those jungle shots!
📱 Offline Maps Help: Download Maps.me or Alltrails.com ahead of time.
🌧️ DO NOT Hike in the Rain: Trails become dangerously slippery, especially around steep areas like The Needle. Always check the forecast before you go.
🏃♂️ Go With a Local or a Guide: Rarotonga’s trails aren’t always marked. Hiking with someone like Bruce from Maunga Tours means a safer, more enriching experience.
📢 Tell Someone Your Plans: Always let someone know which hike you're doing and when you plan to be back—phone reception is non existent in the interior.
👚 Wear Lightweight, Long-Sleeved Clothing: It protects from sunburn, insects, and scratchy jungle plants.
🐾 Respect the Land: Stick to trails, leave no rubbish, and admire this beautiful island without impacting it.
