National trust properties are always my go-to for an easy family day out, because I know everything I need will be here - a cafe, toilets, a play area, and they usually put on extra activities for the kids in the holidays too.
And Chirk castle is one of my favourites, especially as there's a lovely circular walk through the woodlands and grounds here.
We tend not to go into the castle as we much prefer exploring outdoors, but the cafe here is good and indoors which acts as the perfect spot to warm up on a wet or cold day.
There are 2 small play areas here - one just opposite the car park and the other next to the courtyard (and coffee hatch).
