Humberstone, the ghost town that was the center of the Chilean "belle époque" (and what it had to do with the origin of the Pacific War). Developed for the extraction of saltpeter, it is a National Monument of Chile and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designated as the Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter.

Located 47 kilometers east of the city of Iquique, they are national monuments and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Both saltpeter works, although they originally functioned separately, are currently the main reflection of the period of splendor and contrasts that the region experienced between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Santa Laura, in its best period, had a population of 425 inhabitants, while Humberstone exceeded 3,500 inhabitants.

These Ghost Towns have many stories to tell and there are tours both day and night, for the bravest of people.

  • Humberstone: entry $4,000 adult (53 km from Iquique / 45 min)
