Perched at nearly 1000m above sea level on top of a mountain, Unpenji is the highest point of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. To get to this sanctuary in the sky, you'll take a breathtaking 7-minute ride on one of Japan's largest ropeways, gliding high above the mountainside. Once at the top, you're greeted by panoramic views stretching to the Seto Inland Sea and an otherworldly collection of 500 stone statues, each with a unique expression. The temple grounds are beautiful year-round, from summer hydrangeas to vibrant autumn leaves and even a dusting of snow in winter.
