Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), also known as Manila Airport, is the main international gateway to the Philippines, located just south of Manila.

Here are some practical tips for your arrival:

Buying a SIM Card

  • Upon arrival, you’ll find kiosks for major telecom providers like Globe and Smart at the airport. These offer prepaid SIM cards with data plans.

  • Free tourist SIMs are sometimes available, but they may require activation with a top-up.

  • For the best value, consider purchasing a data-only plan if you primarily use messaging apps.

  • We highly recommend choosing a plan that includes local calls, so you can easily contact businesses, hotels, and guides.

  • If you want to save a few dollars on your plan, it can be cheaper to buy the SIM card alone or with a basic package and top up later at any local 7-Eleven store.

  • Note: Top-ups are also available via the GlobeOne or Smart apps.

Exchanging Currency

Surprisingly, some airport exchange booths offer competitive rates. To ensure you're getting a good deal, check the real-time market exchange rate using the XE Currency Converter app.

How to check if it's a fair rate:

  • Divide the market rate by the exchange booth’s rate.

  • If the result is between 0.97 - 1, it’s a decent deal.

  • Otherwise, it’s better to exchange money later at Palawan Pawnshop branches in the city.

ATM Withdrawals

Whenever possible, we recommend avoiding ATM withdrawals in the Philippines because:

  • Most ATMs charge a ₱250 fee per transaction.

  • Exchange rates are often unfavorable.

  • There is usually a ₱10,000 withdrawal limit, meaning multiple transactions add up in fees.

However, there are two exceptions:

  1. BPI ATMs – Allow withdrawals up to ₱20,000.

  2. HSBC ATMs – Allow withdrawals up to ₱40,000, often without the ₱250 fee, but these ATMs are rare, and not all of them allow these terms.

  • If you must withdraw cash, always take out the maximum amount allowed per transaction to minimize fees.

Avoiding Expensive Taxis

  • Skip black airport taxis – They tend to overcharge.

  • Use the Grab app (Southeast Asia’s Uber alternative) for fair pricing and convenience.

  • If taking a metered taxi, choose the yellow airport taxis, which are regulated but slightly pricier than Grab.

  • The cheapest option is the Airport Loop bus, which goes to major transport hubs like Pasay and Makati.

A useful trick to avoid scams: Check the taxi rate card posted inside the taxi, which displays the initial fare and price per kilometer.

Airport WiFi

Upon landing, you can connect to Manila Airport’s free WiFi, but note that it may be slow or unreliable during peak hours. If you need a stable connection, consider using mobile data from a local SIM card or accessing WiFi from an airport lounge or coffee shop.
