If you know the history of the Donner Party (hint: it involves cannibalism) then calling this historical site a picnic area is kind of weird to me. But it is actually is a great spot to walk the short loop with historical markers that tell of the tragic tale of the Donner Party. That being said, it is also a favorite location for a snowshoe hike. Be aware it has very limited parking in the winter since the parking lot is not plowed.

The Donner Party Picnic Area in the Tahoe National Forest is an ideal spot to explore the history of the Donner Party and the hardships they endured. The 1/3 mile interpretive trail is full of information, from personal letters and diaries that tell tragic and moving stories of nearly half of the party who died in these mountains. It's also a great place to relax and take in the stunning scenery, with accessible vault toilets, picnic tables, and parking. This is the perfect place to come and explore, while learning about one of America’s most well-known pioneer tragedies.
