Best Time of Year for South East Queensland Weekend Adventures
When waterfalls flow, beaches shine, and hikes don’t feel brutal
One of the best things about South East Queensland is that you can explore it year-round. But depending on what kind of weekend adventure you’re chasing, some seasons are way better than others.
Here’s how I personally think about timing trips around SEQ.
Summer (December – February)
Best for: Beaches, islands, waterfalls (with caution)
Summer is peak waterfall season. After good rain, places like Lamington, Springbrook, the Scenic Rim, and the Sunshine Coast hinterland absolutely come alive. Creeks are flowing, waterfalls are pumping, and everything looks lush and green.
That said, it’s also hot and humid. Midday hikes can feel brutal, and sudden storms can roll in fast.
My tips:
Start hikes early and aim to be finished by late morning
Always check weather and rain forecasts before waterfall trips
Be extra cautious around fast-moving water and slippery rocks
Beach and island trips shine in summer, especially with early starts
Autumn (March – May)
Best for: Hiking, waterfalls, scenic drives, camping
This is hands down one of the best times of year for SEQ adventures. The humidity drops, temperatures are comfortable, and there’s often still enough recent rain for waterfalls to be flowing nicely.
Autumn weekends feel calmer too, especially outside of school holidays.
My tips:
Perfect season for Lamington, Springbrook, and Scenic Rim hikes
Great balance for mixed trips: waterfalls + lookouts + camping
One of the best times for overnight or multi-day itineraries
Winter (June – August)
Best for: Hiking, lookouts, camping, clear days
Winter is peak hiking season in SEQ. Cool mornings, blue skies, and almost no humidity make it ideal for longer walks and summit hikes.
Waterfalls are usually lighter this time of year, but the trade-off is epic views and super comfortable conditions.
My tips:
Bring layers, mornings can be cold especially inland
Waterfalls may be more about scenery than swimming
Great time for camping, sunrise lookouts, and big walk days
Spring (September – November)
Best for: Wildflowers, waterfalls returning, balanced adventures
Spring is a transition season and often overlooked, but it’s a really solid choice. Waterfalls start flowing again after winter, days warm up, and everything feels fresh.
Late spring can start to feel summery, especially in November.
My tips:
Early spring is great for hiking before the heat returns
Late spring suits waterfalls and coastal trips
Keep an eye on early storm activity towards the end of the season
School Holidays & Long Weekends
No matter the season, timing matters.
Popular spots like Noosa, Springbrook, Lamington, and the Gold Coast hinterland get busy during school holidays and long weekends.
If you want quieter trips:
Aim for weekdays where possible
Start early or go late in the day
Choose lesser-known alternatives nearby (I’ve listed plenty in this guide)
My Overall Take
If I had to pick:
Best all-round seasons: Autumn and Winter
Best waterfall conditions: Summer after rain (with care)
Best hiking comfort: Winter and early Spring
South East Queensland rewards good timing. Pick the right season for the right experience, and even well-known spots can feel incredible.
