What to Pack for SEQ Day Trips vs Weekend Adventures
Simple packing so you’re prepared without overthinking it

Packing for South East Queensland trips doesn’t need to be complicated, but what you bring should change depending on whether you’re heading out for a few hours or a full weekend.
Here’s how I think about packing for SEQ adventures so I’m prepared without carrying unnecessary gear.
Day Trips (Hikes, Beaches, Waterfalls)
For day trips, I keep things light and efficient. You want enough to be comfortable, not weighed down.
My day trip essentials:
Water (more than you think you’ll need)
Snacks or a simple lunch
Sunscreen
Hat
Comfortable shoes
Phone (with maps downloaded if needed)
Depending on the trip:
Swimmers and towel for creeks or beaches
Jumper or light jacket for early mornings or winter hikes
Head torch if there’s any chance you’ll stay for sunset
Day trips are about flexibility. If it feels like you’re overpacking, you probably are.
Weekend Adventures (Camping or Overnight Trips)
Overnight trips need a bit more planning, but it’s still easy to keep things streamlined.
Weekend basics:
Tent, swag, or accommodation booking
Sleeping gear (appropriate for the season)
Food and cooking setup
Plenty of water
Torch or headlamp
Power bank or car charger
Extra things that make a big difference:
Warm layers (even in summer, nights can cool down inland)
Thongs or camp shoes
Rubbish bags (always pack out what you bring)
If you’re camping, check facilities ahead of time so you’re not carrying gear you don’t need.
4WD & Beach Trips
If your trip includes sand driving or remote access, packing properly matters.
4WD essentials:
Tyre pressure gauge
Air compressor
Recovery gear (if you know how to use it)
Tide times saved offline
Extra water
For beach days:
Shade or beach umbrella
Sun protection
Footwear for hot sand
Even short beach drives can turn into long days if conditions change.
Seasonal Add-Ons
SEQ weather changes a lot by season.
Summer:
Extra water
Sunscreen
Lightweight clothing
Winter:
Warm layers
Beanie for early mornings
Hot drinks for camps
After rain:
Spare socks
Towel
Shoes you don’t mind getting wet or muddy
The “Just in Case” Items
These don’t take much space but are worth having:
Basic first aid kit
Offline maps
Extra snacks
Small towel
They’ve saved more weekends than I can count.
My Take
Good packing isn’t about bringing everything — it’s about bringing the right things for the type of trip you’re doing.
Most SEQ adventures don’t need complicated setups. A bit of planning and a realistic look at the conditions will make your weekend smoother and more enjoyable.
This guide helps you choose trips that match your time, setup, and experience, so packing becomes simple instead of stressful.
