⛴️ How to Get to Nusa Penida

Everything you need to know before visiting Bali's most famous island.

Nusa Penida is one of the most popular islands to visit from Bali, famous for its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise water, incredible snorkeling, and breathtaking viewpoints.

It's home to some of Bali's most iconic attractions, including Kelingking Beach, Diamond Beach, Broken Beach, and Angel's Billabong. If you love the ocean, Nusa Penida is also one of the best places in Bali to go snorkeling or diving. Many tours take you to swim with the famous manta rays, colorful coral reefs, and tropical fish in some of the clearest water around the island.

Although many people visit on a day trip, there's plenty to see, and many visitors choose to stay one or two nights to explore at a slower pace.

🏝️ Understanding the Three Islands

Many visitors think Nusa Penida is just one island, but it's actually part of a group of three islands:

• Nusa Penida – the largest island, famous for dramatic cliffs, beaches, viewpoints, snorkeling, and diving.

• Nusa Lembongan – a much smaller and more relaxed island with beach clubs, cafés, surf spots, and beautiful sunsets.

• Nusa Ceningan – the smallest island, connected to Nusa Lembongan by the famous Yellow Bridge.

Each island has a completely different atmosphere.

🏝️ Getting Around Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is much bigger than many people expect.

Although it's much smaller than Bali, you'll definitely need transportation to explore the island. The attractions are spread out, and there are no Grab, Gojek, or online taxi services available.

The roads have improved over the years, but some routes are still steep, narrow, and bumpy.

💛 My Local Tip: If you're not confident riding a scooter, hiring a driver is absolutely worth it. You'll enjoy the trip much more without worrying about the roads.

🌴 Getting Around Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan has a completely different feel.

It's much smaller, quieter, and easier to explore.

If your hotel is near Jungut Batu, Mushroom Bay, or Dream Beach, you'll find plenty of cafés, restaurants, beach clubs, and shops within walking distance.

For longer distances, you can rent a scooter or ask your hotel to arrange transport.

Many restaurants also offer free pick-up and drop-off from nearby hotels, which is a nice bonus that many visitors don't know about.

🌉 Visiting Nusa Ceningan

Nusa Ceningan is connected to Nusa Lembongan by the famous Yellow Bridge, so you can easily walk across.

Most people visit as a half-day or full-day trip from Lembongan.

You can walk to the bridge, but having a scooter makes exploring waterfalls, cliff viewpoints, cafés, and hidden beaches much easier.

🚤 Where Do the Boats Leave From?

There are two main ways to get to Nusa Penida, depending on whether you're travelling as a passenger or bringing your own scooter.

1. Fast Boat from Sanur Harbour (Most Popular)

This is the easiest and fastest option for most visitors.

Fast boats depart throughout the day from Sanur Harbour and arrive at several different ports in Nusa Penida, depending on the boat company.

Most tourists choose this option because it's quick, convenient, and there are multiple departures every day, with the first boats usually leaving around 7:30 AM and services running throughout the afternoon.

2. Public Ferry from Padang Bai

If you're bringing your own scooter or motorbike, you can take the public ferry from Padang Bai Harbour.

Unlike the fast boat, the ferry allows vehicles onboard, making it a great option if you want to explore Nusa Penida with your own scooter.

The crossing takes longer than the fast boat, and there are fewer departures each day. Ferry schedules can also vary depending on weather and operational conditions.

💛 My Local Tip: If you're only visiting Nusa Penida for the day, I highly recommend taking a fast boat from Sanur. If you're staying for a few days and already have your own scooter, the public ferry from Padang Bai is a great budget-friendly option.

⏱️ How Long is the Boat Ride?

• Fast boat from Sanur: 30–45 minutes

• Public ferry from Padang Bai: approximately 1–1.5 hours, depending on sea conditions and loading times.

If the sea is rough, the journey can feel quite bumpy.

If you're prone to seasickness, it's a good idea to take motion sickness tablets before boarding.

💰 How Much Does It Cost?

1. Fast Boat (Most Popular)

For most visitors, a return fast boat ticket from Sanur to Nusa Penida usually costs between:

• IDR 300,000–500,000 per person (return)

Prices vary depending on the boat company, travel season, and whether you book online or directly at the harbour.

💛 My Tip: I usually recommend booking a return ticket in advance. It's often cheaper and saves you the hassle of buying another ticket on the island.

2. Public Ferry (Bringing Your Own Scooter)

If you're planning to bring your own scooter, you can take the public ferry from Padang Bai.

For 2 people with 1 scooter, a return trip usually costs around:

• IDR 180,000–250,000 (2 people + 1 scooter, return)

This is the most affordable option if you're already riding your own scooter around Bali and want to continue exploring Nusa Penida with it.

💛 My Tip: The ferry is much slower than the fast boat and has fewer departures, but it's a great budget-friendly option if you're not in a hurry.

🚤 Which Boat Company Should You Choose?

There are plenty of fast boat companies operating between Sanur and Nusa Penida, and most offer a similar experience.

Rather than choosing the cheapest ticket, I recommend booking with a company that has a good reputation, well-maintained boats, and reliable service.

Here are the companies I recommend :

One of the most comfortable fast boats operating between Bali and Nusa Penida. Their modern boats feature spacious seating and a well-organized boarding process, making them a great choice if comfort is your priority.

• The Angkal Fast Cruise

A reliable operator with modern boats, good customer service, and frequent departures between Sanur and Nusa Penida.

• The Tanis Fast Cruise

A popular option offering good value for money, friendly staff, and a solid reputation among travellers.

• Golden Queen Fast Boat

Another reliable choice with several departures throughout the day, making it a good alternative if your preferred boat is fully booked.

🌊 Sea Conditions

The sea between Bali and Nusa Penida can sometimes be rough, especially during the windy season.

Delays can happen if conditions aren't safe.

If you're flying home the same day, I don't recommend visiting Nusa Penida that morning. Instead, plan your visit earlier in your trip or stay overnight for a more relaxed experience.

🎒 What Should You Bring?

• Sunscreen

• Hat & sunglasses

• Drinking water

• Cash (not everywhere accepts cards)

• Swimwear & towel

• Comfortable sandals or shoes

• Motion sickness tablets (if needed)

💛 My Local Tip

If you're only visiting for the day, book the earliest boat from Sanur and the latest return boat. You'll have much more time to explore and avoid feeling rushed.

If you have the time, I highly recommend staying one or two nights. Watching the island before and after the day-trip crowds leave is a completely different experience—and one of my favorite ways to enjoy Nusa Penida.
