1. Check the weather
Alpine weather is unpredictable. Always check the forecast before heading out I recommend MeteoSwiss or Bergfex. If thunderstorms are predicted, avoid ridgelines and open areas.
2. Bring proper gear
Even for shorter hikes, good hiking boots, layers, and a rain jacket are essential. The temperature can drop fast at higher altitudes. Don’t forget sun protection, the alpine sun is strong, even on cloudy days.
3. Carry enough water & snacks
Some mountain trails have no fountains or restaurants nearby. I always bring a reusable water bottle and a few snacks, especially when photographing for long hours.
4. Plan your route & time
Many trails take longer than expected due to elevation gain or photo stops. Start early and make sure you have enough daylight for your return. If you’re unsure, ask at local mountain huts or tourist offices for up-to-date trail conditions.
5. Respect nature & wildlife
Stay on marked trails, don’t disturb animals (especially cows and marmots), and take your trash back down with you. The Alps are beautiful because they’re still wild, let’s keep them that way.
6. In case of emergency
The Swiss mountain rescue number is 1414 (Rega). Save it on your phone. In remote areas, mobile signal can be weak, so let someone know your plan before heading out.
