The St. Beatus Caves (Beatushöhlen), located on the shores of Lake Thun, are one of Switzerland’s most impressive cave systems. With its cascading waterfalls, underground rivers, and dramatic rock formations, this natural wonder offers a mix of adventure, history, and breathtaking scenery.

Legend has it that St. Beatus, a 6th-century monk, took refuge in these caves after driving out a fire-breathing dragon that once lived there. Today, you can explore about 1 kilometer of the illuminated cave system, walking through narrow passageways and vast chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. The guided and self-guided tours provide fascinating insights into the caves' geology and history.

Outside the caves, the area is just as impressive. A waterfall cascades down the cliffs near the entrance, creating a spectacular sight. The Cave Museum offers additional information about the region’s geology and cave exploration, making it a great addition to the visit. A nearby restaurant with a panoramic terrace overlooks Lake Thun, providing a perfect spot to relax after exploring.

The St. Beatus Caves are easily accessible by hiking trail, boat, bus, or car, making them a convenient day-trip destination from Interlaken or Thun.

Seraina’s Tip: Combine your visit with a hike along the Pilgrimage Trail, which runs along the lake from Thun to Interlaken, passing by the caves. The section between Merligen and Beatushöhlen offers particularly stunning views and makes for a rewarding approach to this mystical site.
