The Brienzer Rothorn, standing at 2,350 meters, offers some of the most breathtaking 360-degree views in Switzerland, overlooking Lake Brienz, the Bernese Alps, and even as far as the Jura and the Black Forest on clear days. It is said that you can see 290 mountain peaks from up here.

One of the most special ways to reach the summit is by riding the Brienz Rothorn Bahn, Switzerland’s last steam-powered cogwheel railway, which has been operating since 1892. The one-hour journey from Brienz is an experience in itself, as the nostalgic red train chugs up steep slopes, passing through alpine meadows, tunnels, and ridges with spectacular lake and mountain views along the way.

At the top, the Berggasthaus Rothorn Kulm offers Swiss specialties with a panoramic terrace, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a meal or coffee while taking in the breathtaking surroundings.

Seraina’s Tip: Be sure to reserve your seat in advance on the train, as it gets super busy, especially during peak season and on weekends. The nostalgic steam train ride is part of the experience, and securing your spot ensures you don’t miss out. If you want a quieter visit, consider taking the first train of the day or coming outside of peak hours.
