The Aare Gorge is a very impressive natural wonder, located between Meiringen and Innertkirchen in the Bernese Oberland. Over thousands of years, the Aare River carved this 1.4-kilometer-long gorge through limestone rock, creating a dramatic landscape of towering cliffs, narrow passageways, and deep turquoise waters.

You can explore the gorge on a well-maintained walkway, which includes tunnels, bridges, and wooden paths built along the rock walls. The narrowest section of the gorge is just 1 meter wide, creating a breathtaking contrast with the up to 200-meter-high rock faces. As you walk through, the sound of rushing water and the cool, misty air add to the unique atmosphere of this geological marvel.

The Aare Gorge has two entrances, one at Meiringen (west entrance) and one at Innertkirchen (east entrance). You can start at either side and walk through the gorge in about 40 minutes, or make it a round trip for a longer experience. Both entrances are accessible by train, with small railway stops located right at the gorge’s entrance.

Take a train to Meiringen and then a short ride to Aareschlucht West or Aareschlucht Ost. If driving, parking is available at both entrances.
