Udawalawe National Park is a stunning natural reserve that spans over 30,000 hectares. It’s famous for its impressive population of elephants, making it a top spot for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike. The park was established in 1972 to provide a sanctuary for animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir.

Visitors can expect to see herds of elephants roaming freely, often coming close to the roads, which makes for some unforgettable encounters. Besides elephants, the park is home to a variety of other wildlife, including water buffalo, deer, and numerous bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
Much, much quieter than visiting Yala but also a much lower chance of seeing a leopard if that is your hope
