What you’ll do

The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica has an entirely different vibe, people, food, and climate from the rest of the country. The Caribbean influence is strong; that's why you will find fish curry on the menu instead of a typical Costa Rican Casado. We love the colorful vibes of the Caribbean coast; it gives us all the holiday vibes and moods. There is more music in the streets and on the beaches, and this part of Costa Rica has some of the country's most beautiful beaches. But it also is the wettest part and doesn't have a consistent dry season like the rest of the country. So always expect some rain when visiting this part of Costa Rica. But it's totally worth it. The best months tend to be September & October.

Drive from San Jose to La Pavona in your car and park it there during your trip. The parking costs approximately 10 USD per day and must be paid in cash. At the station, there is a restaurant and restrooms. If you don’t drive by yourself, buses are leaving from San Jose Terminal del Caribe. The ride takes about 2 hours and costs 3 USD.

Tortuguero the first stop on the Caribbean coast can only be reached by boat. The shuttle boats leave pretty much every hour from La Pavona. Usually, when booking your accommodation, they will send you a boat schedule. Some hotels even offer their own transportation for guests.
