A Hidden Piece of Azorean History šŸ’š

If you love discovering hidden gems , then Muro das Nove Janelas should definitely be on your list. This old stone aqueduct, tucked away on the island of SĆ£o Miguel, isn’t just a cool historic spot, it’s also surrounded by some seriously stunning nature.

Most people visiting SĆ£o Miguel head straight to the big-name attractions like Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, but if you’re looking for something unique and off the beaten path, this place is worth a stop.

Where to Find It šŸ—ŗļø

Muro das Nove Janelas is located in the Serra de Ɓgua de Pau region, not far from Lagoa do CanĆ”rio and the road leading to Boca do Inferno. It’s tucked away in the forest, so while it’s not as well-marked as other attractions, it’s still easy to reach if you know where to go! You can park nearby and walk a short distance to see the aqueduct up close.

Why visit Muro das Nove Janelas?

It’s a Unique Historical Landmark

While SĆ£o Miguel is famous for its volcanic craters and lakes, it also has some fascinating historical spots. This aqueduct is a great example of 18th-century engineering and an important piece of the island’s past.

The Surroundings are Breathtaking

The aqueduct is surrounded by dense forests, rolling hills, and peaceful walking trails, making it a great place to stretch your legs and take in the scenery. It’s especially beautiful when the mist rolls in, giving it a magical, almost mystical vibe.

When to visit ? šŸ—“ļø

You can visit Muro das Nove Janelas year-round, but the best time is spring through early autumn (April to October) when the weather is mild, and the surrounding greenery is at its peak. Mornings tend to be clearer, but even if it’s foggy, the mist adds a cool, moody atmosphere.

Things to Do Nearby

Since you’re already in the area, why not check out some other amazing spots nearby?

  • Lagoa do CanĆ”rio – A beautiful, lesser-known lake just a short drive away.

  • Boca do Inferno Viewpoint – One of the best panoramic views in the Azores.

  • Sete Cidades – The famous twin lakes are just a quick drive from here.

Muro das Nove Janelas is a fantastic stop. Whether you’re into history, photography, or just love stumbling upon hidden gems, this place is worth checking out.
