Message from Laura

The Recreational Forest Reserve of Fontinhas is a chill spot on Santa Maria Island in the Azores, Portugal. Created in 1989, this 3-hectare forest paradise offers a mix of nature and human spaces for some laid-back leisure time. With lush greenery, picnic areas, and walking trails, it's the perfect place to unwind and connect with the great outdoors.

Where Is It?

The Recreational Forest of Fontinhas is in the northern part of Santa Maria, about 10 minutes from Vila do Porto and close to São Pedro. It’s easy to get to by car, and there’s plenty of parking right by the entrance.

  • From Vila do Porto: 10-minute drive

  • From Santa Maria Airport: 15-minute drive

  • From Praia Formosa: 15-minute drive

What to Expect

1. Walking Trails & Greenery

Fontinhas is all about calm, shaded walks through nature. The park is full of tall trees, flowering plants, and open grassy areas, making it a peaceful place for a leisurely stroll or a quiet moment to recharge. The paths are well-maintained, so it’s easy to wander around without worrying about rough terrain.

2. Picnic & Barbecue Areas

Fontinhas is its picnic-friendly setup. There are wooden tables, stone barbecue grills, and plenty of shaded spots where you can enjoy a packed lunch or cook up something fresh. If you don’t feel like bringing your own food, there are some great restaurants just a short drive away (we’ll get to those in a bit).

3. A Quiet, Family-Friendly Spot

If you’re traveling with kids, this park is a great place to let them run around and explore. There’s plenty of space to kick a ball, play a game, or just enjoy nature without the distractions of the more touristy spots.

Best Time to Visit

Fontinhas is open year-round, but here’s what to expect depending on the season:

  • Spring & Summer – Lush greenery, warm weather, and the perfect time for a picnic.

  • Autumn – A little quieter, with cooler air and a cozy feel.

  • Winter – Less crowded, but still a nice spot for a peaceful walk.

If you want to enjoy the park without too many people around, early mornings and weekdays are the best times to visit.

If you have extra time, here are some great places to check out nearby:

  • Barreiro da Faneca (10 min drive) – A unique red desert landscape that feels like another planet.

  • Praia Formosa (15 min drive) – One of Santa Maria’s best sandy beaches.

  • São Lourenço Bay (20 min drive) – Stunning ocean views and great swimming spots.

Where to Eat Nearby
