Tucked away on the north coast of São Miguel, this viewpoint is the kind of place that makes you stop and appreciate just how wild and beautiful the island really is.

Info: 📝

From this location you will get a stunning panorama of the coastline, rolling green hills, and the Atlantic stretching out in front of you. It’s the kind of spot where you can just sit, breathe, and soak it all in. But the real highlight? The waterfall. Salto da Farinha is a 40-metre (130-foot) cascade tucked into the cliffs, surrounded by lush greenery. Depending on the season and recent rainfall, it can be a powerful rush of water or a more delicate trickle, but either way, it’s a gorgeous sight.

Getting There: Parking and Trails

Miradouro do Salto da Farinha is easy to reach by car, and there’s a small parking area right by the viewpoint. If you’re up for a short hike, there’s a trail that takes you down closer to the waterfall. It’s not difficult, but it can be a little steep in places, so I recommend hiking boots. The trail winds through dense vegetation and old stone paths.

If you’re really in the mood to explore, keep going down to the abandoned watermill near the base of the falls. It’s a cool little piece of history, and the whole area has a quiet, almost hidden feel to it. If you continue on the trail , it leads to a secluded black sand beach too if you’re up for a longer hike!

Photo spots 📸

This spot has plenty of photo opportunities. The viewpoint itself gives you a perfect wide-angle shot of the coastline and ocean, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light hits just right. For a different angle, take the trail down toward the falls. The lush green cliffs framing the waterfall make for an amazing backdrop.

Nearby Food Spots 🥪

If you’re looking for something to eat after your hike, there are some great local spots nearby:

Casa de Pasto O Cardoso (Achadinha) – About a 10-minute drive away, this cozy spot serves up traditional Azorean food, including fresh seafood, local cheeses, and hearty stews.

Restaurante Poço Azul (Nordeste) – If you’re heading east, this restaurant offers great seafood and homemade desserts with a view.
