If you’re looking for one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the Azores, you need to visit Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz. This stunning white chapel sits high above Vila Franca do Campo, offering unreal panoramic views of the town, the coastline, and the famous Ilhéu de Vila Franca (that little islet floating just offshore).
But it’s not just about the view. This hidden gem has a peaceful vibe, a fascinating history, and one of the prettiest staircases you’ll ever see. Let’s get into everything you need to know before visiting.
Location:
25 minutes from Ponta Delgada by car
10 minutes from Vila Franca do Campo town center
It’s easy to reach, and trust me, it’s worth the short detour.
How to Get There
Getting to the chapel is super easy if you have a car.
By Car: From Vila Franca do Campo, follow signs up the hill. There’s a small parking area at the top.
By Foot: If you’re up for a challenge, you can hike up from town. It’s a steep climb but a rewarding one.
By Tour: Some guided tours include this spot, often paired with nearby attractions like Lagoa do Congro or Furnas.
The Iconic Staircase
One of the best features of this chapel? The stunning zigzag staircase leading up to it.
There are 10 terraces, each with traditional blue-and-white azulejo tiles (Portuguese ceramic tiles) that tell the story of the life of Jesus.
It makes for amazing photos, especially when the sky is clear and blue.
If you’re feeling lazy, you can drive straight to the top, but trust me, walking up is part of the experience.
The View from the Top
Once you reach the chapel, you’ll be blown away by the view.
Vila Franca do Campo spreads out below, with its red-roofed houses and coastline.
Ilhéu de Vila Franca, the tiny volcanic islet, sits just off the coast.
On a clear day, you can see all the way to the horizon, with nothing but blue ocean stretching out in front of you.
📸 It’s one of the best photo spots on São Miguel!
Best Time to Visit 🌤️
Morning: Fewer people, cooler temperatures, and softer light for photos.
Afternoon: Great lighting, but it can be busier.
Sunset: The golden light over the town and ocean is unbeatable.
It’s quick to visit, easy to reach, and one of the most peaceful spots on São Miguel. Enjoy!
