Eikan-dō, also known as Zenrin-ji, is a Jōdo-shū Buddhist temple located just a short walk from the Philosopher’s Path. Founded in the 9th century, it’s best known for its breathtaking autumn foliage—one of Kyoto’s most spectacular momiji spots—and for its unique statue of Amida Buddha looking over his shoulder.

Entrance fee:

  • ¥600 during the off-season

  • In autumn (mid-Nov to early Dec): ¥1,000 (daytime), ¥600 (nighttime illuminations)

Touristy? Very popular in autumn, but relatively quiet the rest of the year.
Tip: Come right at opening (9 AM) to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, or visit in the evening for the special autumn illuminations.
