Perched on Mount Hiei between Kyoto and Lake Biwa, Enryaku-ji is a vast monastic complex founded in 788 by the monk Saichō. It is the birthplace of Tendai Buddhism in Japan and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site is divided into three main areas: Tōdō (home to the main hall), Saitō, and Yokawa—connected by peaceful forest trails. The atmosphere is serene, surrounded by centuries-old cedar trees.

Entrance fee: ¥1,000 for the Tōdō area. Full pass (all 3 areas): ¥1,500.
Touristy? Not very touristy, even in peak season. Mostly visited by pilgrims, history enthusiasts, or travelers seeking tranquility.
