Capital of the prefecture of the same name, Nagano is known for its calm atmosphere and historic temples. Its most iconic site is Zenkō-ji, one of the most important Buddhist temples in Japan, attracting both pilgrims and tourists. The city also serves as a convenient base to explore the surrounding mountains, including the Northern Japanese Alps, ski resorts like Hakuba, and hot spring villages like Yudanaka and Shibu Onsen. In winter, it's a great hub for accessing ski areas. In autumn, visitors come to admire the vibrant maple foliage in the nearby hills.
Touristy? : Not very touristy on an international level (except for Jigokudani, which is very well-known), but very popular among Japanese visitors and mountain enthusiasts.
